I was fortunate to have lived in San Francisco, where I enjoyed visiting the retired military batteries. Built in the late 1800s to protect the San Francisco Bay, they were fortunately never used in its defense. The weapons were later removed or rendered inoperable, but the concrete structures, integrated into the coastal landscape, still remain. These utilitarian, brutalist forms transform as the midday sun moves overhead. Shadows play across their angular surfaces, bringing them to life and imbuing the sites with a renewed sense of purpose. I explored the city’s coastline, shooting this project on medium-format film to create these abstract pictures.
